Whatever one may think of Assad and Putin, there is no question from the standpoint of international law that the United States and its allies are committing acts of aggression in Syria. Under international law, U.S. war planes may enter Syrian airspace either at the invitation of the internationally recognized government of Syria, which is the Assad regime, or with the approval of the U.N. Security Council. Neither of those conditions has been satisfied. Thus, the U.S. military is an invader and has no legal right to operate in Syrian airspace. The Russian military, by contrast, is present at the invitation of the internationally recognized government of Syria. If a U.S. warplane is shot down in Syria in the days ahead, the culprit will be the United States military.
